The Northern Land Council (NLC) in the Northern Territory has nominated Muckaty station, about 100 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, as a site for a Commonwealth nuclear waste facility.

The NLC says the station will be considered for a low level radio waste facility with an above ground store for intermediate level waste.

An agreement has been reached with the Ngapa traditional owners that in return they will receive a $12 million package including a $11 million charitable trust and a $1 million educational scholarship fund.

Under the deal that has been reached there will be road access to the site from the Stuart Highway along an existing mining road.

The agreement does not include access to the railway.

A second potential site on Muckaty station will not proceed due to concerns about sacred sites.
