The Alice Springs Town Council has rejected a proposal to speak against a planned nuclear waste dump at the local government national general assembly in November.

Alderman Jane Clark proposed the motion last night, which objected to the process by which the Commonwealth made its decision to place the dump in the Territory.

She says she is amazed many aldermen have changed their view on the issue and is concerned about the message it is sending to the Federal Government.

"The Federal Government continually gets away with overriding Northern Territory decisions," she said.

"If we just shut up and let them do it, that was another attitude within council as well - 'oh well, they're going to do what they want to anyway' - but we're the elected members so we're actually in a position where we should be getting up and shouting, 'you can't get away with that'," she said.
