The group will be handing out an information sheet (attached) to CLP delegates and passersby, alerting the CLP that voter concerns around proposed nuclear facilities in the NT are not being adequately addressed.
"We are calling upon the CLP to fully acknowledge the concerns of Territorians about further development of nuclear facilities. There is strong opposition to the proposed Commonwealth nuclear waste dump yet CLP elected representatives seem to be disregarding the opinion of their constituents and forging ahead with their own grand visions of a Nuclear Territory" stated Nat Wasley from the No Waste Alliance (NWA) , Alice Springs.
Added Justin Tutty from NWA Darwin, "The latest idea by David Tollner to develop a uranium processing facility in the NT would further entrench the Territory in the nuclear cycle, generating more radioactive waste and increasing pressure for development of a waste dump here that would remain dangerous for the next few thousand years"
Added Ms Wasley, "this weekend the CLP has the option of sticking to their motto of being "The Territory Party" and throwing out David Tollner's ridiculous suggestion of uranium processing in the NT. The No Waste Alliance suggests that the CLP also throw out their pro-nuclear politicians who are not adequately representing the interests of their constituents"
the leaflet on the day went a little something like this :
The CLP call themselves "The Territory Party."
David Tollner, Darwin's Federal CLP MP, won the seat promising to "Stand up for the Territory."
So voters were stunned when he abandoned these principles to nominate our Territory as a dump for the Commonwealth's unwanted nuclear waste.
Not content with that disgrace, Tollner helped draft federal legislation designed to render the NT powerless against his vision of our Territory as a nuclear waste land.
Tollner's CLP colleague, Senator Nigel Scullion, could have defeated that legislation, by crossing the floor of the Senate. But when the Bill was presented to the Senate last year, Scullion sold us out, voting with the Federal Government
to impose nuclear waste on unwilling Territorians.
Adding insult to injury, Tollner recently proposed to establish a nuclear fuel processing plant in Darwin, which would create even more radioactive waste destined to be dumped somewhere in our Territory.
Our federal politicians are elected to represent our interests in Canberra, NOT the other way around.
These failed representatives must be given the boot -
if not by the CLP now, then by voters in next year's federal election.
