Greens call on ministers to visit proposed nuclear waste dump sites
Australian Greens senators Rachel Siewert, Kerry Nettle and Christine Milne today visited the Indigenous community who live on the land surrounding Mt Everard, near Alice Springs, one of three sites proposed for a national nuclear waste dump.
"It was a great privilege to be invited by the Traditional Owners of the land and to listen to their cultural connections to the land," Greens energy spokesperson Senator Milne said in Alice Springs.
"These people have been completely ignored by the federal government and none of the federal ministers responsible for making decisions about the waste dump site has made any effort to see for themselves what devastating impact a nuclear waste dump would have.
"While the government grandstands on Indigenous issues, talking about health and education crises in communities, its own actions are undermining Aboriginal culture and community.
"It is time for the ministers to really listen to Indigenous people and to try to understand the connection people have to the land on which they live."
The senators' visit followed an Australian Greens National Council meeting in Alice Springs at the weekend where delegates from across the country passed a motion opposing the nuclear waste dump and expressed support for working with Indigenous people to overcome Aboriginal poverty and disadvantage.
