Energy Resources Australia (ERA) says a new $28 million water plant at Jabiru's Ranger uranium mine will extend the mine's life to 2014.
ERA says it will now process lower-grade material at the mine.
The upgrade follows a water contamination incident in which mine processing water got into water for drinking and showering.
The Northern Territory Mines Minister, Kon Vatskalis, says ERA's decision to invest in the treatment plant is a wise one.
