The Northern Territory Government says discussions will be held with BHP Billiton executives later this year about moving more product from the Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia on the railway and through the Port of Darwin.

NT Chief Minister Clare Martin says every opportunity is being explored to get bulk minerals on the trade route.

The mine produces a number of materials, including uranium and copper.

Ms Martin says some discussions have already been held and if contracts are secured, it would see a surge in rail freight going through the NT.

"Forty per cent of the world's uranium will come from Olympic Dam. I can't tell you that in terms of dollars, but it would be a significant contract," she said.
