The Northern Territory Deputy Chief Minister, Syd Stirling, says he has supported overturning the 'three uranium mine' policy since 1990.

Labor politicians, including Peter Garrett and Member for Arnhem Barbara McCarthy, have today spoken out against Opposition Leader Kim Beazley's plan to scrap the policy.

But Mr Stirling says he has always thought the three mine policy was stupid.

"If you don't support uranium mining why is three all right?" he said.

"If you do support it what's wrong with five?

"My position's never changed not withstanding that's been the Federal Labor Party policy for all of those years and as a sworn member of the Labor Party I uphold policy."
