An environmental economist says Top End residents should be concerned by plans for a nuclear power plant on the Indonesian island of Java.

The Australia Institute's Dr Clive Hamilton says Indonesia is trying to secure investors for the large power plant in central Java.

Dr Hamilton says scientists from the Australian National University have predicted that any major accident at the facility would cause a radiation cloud that would drift across northern Australia.

"Darwin would have, according to the modellers, perhaps four or five days during the summer months - if that's where the prevailing winds were - to prepare for radioactivity arriving across the seas," he said.
