While a majority of Australians (54%) think that Australia should develop and export uranium for peaceful purposes, 70% of Australians think there should not be more uranium mines operating in Australia . Only 23% of Australians believe more uranium mines should operate in Australia and 7% are undecided, a special telephone Morgan Poll finds.

Majorities of both L-NP and ALP supporters (62% and 77%, respectively) think there should not be more uranium mines operating in Australia . While even more Democrat (89%) and Greens (82%) supporters think that there should not be more uranium mines operating.

While 54% (down 7% since March 2005) of Australians think Australia should develop and export uranium for peaceful purposes, this is the lowest level of support since April 1979. Now, 38% (up 6%) of Australians think that Australia should not develop and export uranium for peaceful purposes while 8% are undecided.

Sixty-nine percent of L-NP supporters and 50% of ALP supporters think that Australia should develop and export uranium for peaceful purposes, however a majority of Democrat (70%), One Nation (59%) and Greens (53%) supporters think Australia should not develop and export uranium for peaceful purposes.

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on October 12/13 with an Australia-wide cross-section of 662 men and women aged 14 and over.
