China asks to dig Australian uranium

THE Northern Territory's uranium mining boom took on a new dimension yesterday when it was revealed that China is to join the exploration race.

Beijing has asked the Federal Government for permission to look for uranium in Australia.

The Chinese have been told they must apply for exploration licences from the Territory and South Australian governments.

"This is good news," said NT Minerals Council chief executive Kezia Purich.

"The Chinese Government is a long-term planner, which is great news for the Territory."
