Rudd's win pleases uranium lobby group

ABC NT Local News

Kevin Rudd's election win has pleased a lobby group that believes the Labor leader will help expand uranium mining.

The Australian Uranium Association (AUA) says Mr Rudd's comments on business regulation reform could indicate bans on uranium mining in Queensland will be lifted.

There are 25 uranium deposits near Mount Isa, in the state's north-west, worth about $4 billion.

AUA executive director Michael Angwin is hopeful the reforms could be a breakthrough for the industry.

"Mr Rudd is the architect of the ALP's uranium policy which is to allow the industry to expand," he said.

"His election builds up some momentum in that, certainly some expectation in that, and whilst I don't have any insights into how he might manage his relationship with the states, I'm certainly encouraged by his personal commitment to uranium expansion."
