Midnight miner charged with 56 breaches of Mines Act

ABC NT Local News

The company behind the Midnight Miner, the man who attempted to claim a uranium deposit in Central Australia early last year, will face the Darwin Magistrates Court next month.

On a moonlight night in December 2006, Norm McCleary pegged out claims over the Angela and Pamela deposits near Alice Springs moments after the Northern Territory Government lifted restrictions on the land.

The deposits are potentially worth billions of dollars and the McCleary Investments claim gazumped several other companies.

The Supreme Court later ruled the claim unlawful because Mr McCleary was trespassing.

The Department of Justice has charged McCleary Investments with 56 breaches of the Mines Act.

The Mines Department says Mr McCleary entered the land without the permission of the mining warden.
