ERA to resume operations at Ranger mine

Uranium producer Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) expects to resume normal operations at its Ranger mine in the Northern Territory after tropical Cyclone Helen halted mining on Friday.

ERA spokeswoman Libby Beath said production had continued throughout the weather event and mining was expected to resume by Monday.

"We're anticipating that everything will be as normal from this evening," Ms Beath told AAP on Sunday.

The Ranger mine was flooded in February last year when Cyclone George dumped 850mm of rain, filling the open pit and temporarily stopping milling operations.

ERA has instituted a number of measures, including improved water catchment control and an increased dewatering capacity of the pit in a bid to prevent similar flooding in the future.

The cyclone was downgraded Saturday to an intense tropical low as it tracked overland, and is currently about 300 km west of Weipa, on the western side of Cape York Peninsula.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned the system might redevelop into a tropical cyclone overnight as it moves east towards the Queensland coast.

A Rio Tinto Alcan spokeswoman told AAP operations at the Gove alumina refinery and bauxite mine had not been disrupted and the company continued to monitor the tropical low's progress.

The operation, located about 996 kilometres east of Darwin, was forced to halt production in April 2006 and declare force majeure on exports after Cyclone Monica lashed the mine.
