No decision yet on nuclear waste site: Garrett

ABC News Online

Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett will not rule out a nuclear waste facility in the Northern Territory.

In Alice Springs to launch the Solar Cities Initiative, Mr Garrett says the Government has not made a decision about waste facilities.

But he says site investigation contracts that already exist will not be cancelled.

Mr Garrett has given a guarantee that no community will have a site imposed on them.

"The Government hasn't made any decision on any site and it won't do so without proper scientific process, without adequate and proper community consultation processes in place," he said.

"And we've said, unlike the Howard government, that we won't impose a nuclear waste site on any community."

Mr Garrett has also rejected claims that the approval of uranium exploration at the Angela Pamela about 25 kilometres from Alice Springs and is at odds with the solar cities efforts.
