No follow up action on Australia agreeing to supply uranium

Australia had agreed in principle to supply uranium to India after waiver of guidelines by the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) but the follow up action has not taken place yet, Government said on Thursday.

Replying to questions in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan said Australian Prime Minister had in August, 2007 informed his Indian counterpart about his country's willingness to supply uranium.

"It was decided that official level discussions would follow. But it has not happened yet," he said.

The previous John Howard government had agreed in principle to supply uranium to India, but the new dispensation of Kevin Rudd has conveyed that his Labour party's policies do not allow nuclear cooperation with non NPT countries.

Civil nuclear cooperation, including supply of uranium, will be possible only when the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group alters its guidelines, he said, adding the government was working towards that end.

He pointed out that the nuclear agreement with the US and negotiations with the IAEA to firm up a India-specific safeguards treaty are steps to alter the guidelines so that India can have civil nuclear commerce with other countries.
