Public Meeting Wednesday, May 7
The keynote speaker will be Dr Gavin Mudd, a civil engineering lecturer at Monash University.
Dr Mudd has active research interests in urban groundwater issues, groundwater management and assessment, especially with respect to climate change and sustainability. He has had extensive involvement in examining the underlying scientific issues associated with uranium mining in Australia, with detailed knowledge of the Australian uranium mining sector.
Other speakers include a representative from Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation, Dr Hilary Tyler from the Medical Association for the Prevention of War and Natalie Wasley from the Beyond Nuclear Initiative.
Ms Wasley stated “public comments on the exploration license application are due at the end of May. These comments must be considered by the NT Mines Minister Chris Natt in deciding whether to grant the license. The Alice Springs Angela Pamela (ASAP) collective organised the public meeting to facilitate informed community discussion and input to this process”.
"The uranium deposits are situated 25 km south of Alice Springs, within the town water catchment boundary and in close proximity to planned and existing bore fields for our drinking water supplies. If enough community opposition to this proposal is expressed to the NT Government, the Mines Minister Chris Natt will have to take notice” added Ms Wasley.
ASAP collective member Dr Tom Keaney is also concerned about the global implications of uranium mining. “The potential economic benefits of uranium mining can not be divorced from the risks of local contamination from radioactive materials, the catastrophic effects of nuclear reactor dysfunction, the production of radioactive waste or the potential for reprocessed Alice Springs uranium to end up in a nuclear warhead. These risks have clear local, regional and global implications”.
“We are expecting a large turnout at the meeting next Wednesday. Many people have contacted ALEC to express they do not want a uranium mine in the region and would like information from sources independent of the nuclear industry and government” concluded Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) coordinator Jimmy Cocking.
The public meeting will be held at the Anzac Hill High School Hall on the 7th of May at 6pm.
The meeting has been organised by the Alice Springs Angela Pamela (ASAP) Collective, and is supported by the Public Health Association, Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation, The Arid Lands Environment Centre, Medical Association for the Prevention of War and the Beyond Nuclear Initiative.
