3CR broadcast Sunday 25th May, 2008 11am

The Central Desert is a region high on agenda in the nuclear industry, and the Northern territory government is keen to keep it open for development. Today on Earth Matters we hear about the latest uranium mining proposal, and how the Alice Springs community is calling for a stop to development ASAP! Angela-Pamela is a uranium deposit near Alice Springs for which exploration rights have recently been awarded to a Canadian-Australian joint venture. ASAP - the Alice Springs Angela-Pamela collective - is a community group opposed to exploration and mining of the site. Natalie Wasley, the co-ordinator of the Beyond Nuclear Initiative, and a member of ASAP, based at the Arid Lands Environment Centre in Alice Springs.

As this program goes to air, the opportunity to make submissions against the award of exploration rights for the Angela-Pamela deposit is closing. Find out what happens next with the proposed uranium development by visiting the Arid Lands Environment Centre’s website, at www.alec.org.au.
