ACF lobbys Govt over Darwin Harbour, nuclear dump

ABC NT Local News

The Australian Conservation Foundation has called for a more rigorous environmental assessment of the proposed gas plant at Blaydin Point in Darwin Harbour.

The ACF's executive director Don Henry met with the Territory's Environment Minister Len Kiely today in Darwin to discuss the plant.

Mr Henry says he is concerned about the environmental impact on the harbour.

"The very first thing that should happen is have a really good plan that looks after the harbour.

"Then you decide where industrial developments should occur.

"At the moment it seems to be the developers that are driving it more than the Government. Lets get it the right way round.

Mr Henry also urged the Government to pressure their Canberra counterparts over the proposed nuclear waste dump at Muckaty Station near Tennant Creek.

The federal Labor Party is yet to move on its election promise to repeal legislation relating to the dump and is still considering what to do about radioactive waste management.

Mr Henry says the Territory Government should communicate concern about the proposed dump at Muckaty to the Prime Minister.

"I really hope that they will raise a strong voice from the Northern Territory saying 'Come on Prime Minister, you promised to get rid of this obnoxious legislation, lets do it now'."
