NT nuclear dump 'never ruled out': Labor

The Federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson is refusing to talk to the ABC about where a potential nuclear waste dump will be built in Australia.

Mr Ferguson has been quoted in a Melbourne newspaper saying a review of four sites in the Northern Territory will be fast tracked.

But a spokesman for the minister says plans are not being fast tracked and a report on the sites should be finished this month or next month.

Martin Ferguson's Labor colleague Senator Trish Crossin says the dump could well be in the Northern Territory.

"We have never said that the waste dump would not be in the Northern Territory. We've never said that. In fact, we've alluded to people that it may well be in the Northern Territory, but we have said is that there will be consultation and a fair and proper process."

The Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon says he remains opposed to having a nuclear waste facility in his Northern Territory electorate.

He says while Territory sites are still being considered, the Government will follow through with its pre-election commitment to repeal the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act.

"No decisions have been made and no state has been ruled in or out. That's where the discussion is at the moment. I can understand why people are being exercised by the comments over the weekend. I share with them the concern that we do meet our commitments and I'll be endeavouring to make certain we do."

But both Mr Snowdon and Territory Senator Trish Crossin have admitted there's a national obligation to have a nuclear waste facility and it may end up in the Territory. A spokesman for Mr Ferguson denies plans are being fast-tracked
