Roxby Downs the best spot for nuclear dump: NT Chief Minister

The Northern Territory Chief Minister says scientific reports show South Australia is the best place for a nuclear waste dump.

The Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson is expected to receive a report on possible sites in the Northern Territory this month.

Paul Henderson says the Northern Territory should not be chosen simply because it does not have the same rights as the states.

"The science was concluded many years ago when there were eight sites evaluated. The most preferable sight was Roxby Downs in South Australia.

"Decisions from the Federal Government should be scientifically, geologically (based on) what is the most stable and best site."

The Federal Opposition's energy spokesman David Johnston - who is pushing the Government to get on with selecting a site for the dump - says Muckaty Station, north of Tennant Creek, is the logical site for the dump.

But he agrees with Mr Ferguson's call for the issue to be resolved without political point scoring.

"I'm not going to make a political issue out of it, I just think it's in the national interest to have a repository for these low level radio-active isotopes and let's get on with it."

Meanwhile, a traditional owner for one of the sites being considered for the dump says she is outraged at the Federal Government's lack of cultural understanding.

Mt Everade, 40 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, is one of three Northern Territory sites being looked at.

Kathleen Martin says the site is known to the local Arrente people as the land of the dreamtime, where two sacred rivers meet underground.

"This is where our heritage is and I just wish the government would realise that we do have a cultural playing in certain areas here and I do thing that they can plant those dangerous wastes anywhere on the premises that it's no danger to people that's absolutely ridiculous."

The former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer has also entered the debate over the dump, raising concerns about the environmental implications of a possible nuclear waste dump.

Mr Fischer says the Stuart Highway should not be used to transport waste as it could put tourists and other road users in danger.

"Rail is the most sensible way for Europe to elect to move radioactive product.

"It is the most energy efficient way of moving product period, and b, it has the strongest safety record.

"So if these projects go ahead, far better it be on rail than sitting on the Stuart Highway past a whole lot of tourist coaches belting out to Litchfield and other national parks."
