Cameco states case for uranium mining

ABC News Online

Representatives from the mining company Cameco addressed the Alice Springs Town Council last night.

The company wants to mine 25 kilometres south of Alice Springs and was given 10 minutes to present the pros and cons of uranium mining.

A group of about 20 community members crammed into the Alice Springs Town Council chambers to hear the Cameco deputation.

Before the company representatives arrived, the community members made an impassioned plea to the council for more analysis and careful consideration of the proposed Angela and Pamela uranium mine.

Cameco addressed some concerns about water contamination and land rehabilitation.

It also appealed to the public and the council to engage in open communication about the proposed mine

A petition opposing the mine and many submissions were lodged during an objection period which closed last month.

A spokesman for the Northern Territory Mines Department says the comments are being collated and they will be considered by the Government and the mining companies.
