Garrett to consider uranium site
NT News
THE Federal Government will consider a proposal to lock up the Koongarra uranium deposit as part of Kakadu National Park.
The site, 3km from the iconic Nourlangie Rock art area, has 14,000 tonnes of uranium and French nuclear giant Areva wants to mine it.
But the area's senior traditional owner Jeffrey Lee has spoken out strongly against uranium mining on his land. He will meet with the Northern Land Council soon and said the NLC chairman Wali Wunungmurra said the council would support whatever decision Mr Lee made.
If the Land Concil recommends the area be included in Kakadu, Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett will consider the proposal.
