No Mine At Koongarra
The Northern Territory Government stands firm in its opposition to any mine at Koongarra.
Environment Minister, Len Kiely, said the Government went to the last election with a very clear position – no mining at Koongarra. In stark contrast the CLP opposition supported mining at the site which is only 3 kilometres from Noarlangie Rock.
"We will do everything we can to stop mining from going ahead at Koongarra," said Mr Kiely.
"Koongarra is a special place within close proximity of Noarlangie Rock which has long been recognised as a site of national and international significance.
"The environmental and cultural value of the area surrounding Noarlangie Rock including Koongarra can not be underestimated.
"Thousands of tourists visit Noarlangie each year and I find it hard to comprehend that anyone who has been to Noarlangie Rock could support mining in the area.
"As you look over the spectacular country and see the art work of people who lived thousands of years ago it is clear that Noarlangie and Koongarra must be protected.
"We have made our position clear to Territorians and the Federal Government and we will continue to fight against mining at Koongarra.
"I encourage the CLP opposition to reconsider its position and join the fight to protect an important part of the Territory."
