Govt accused of holding secret meetings over nuclear dump

ABC News Online

An anti-nuclear campaigner says the Federal Resources Minister is disregarding his own party's policy on nuclear waste facilities by holding secret talks with Northern Territory traditional owners.

Natalie Wasley says Martin Ferguson's meeting with the Northern Land Council yesterday is a sign he is not going to uphold a pre-election promise to repeal the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act.

She says a similar meeeting in Canberra with a small group of traditional owners from the proposed waste site at Muckaty in Central Australia are worrying the community.

Ms Wasley says Territory communities affected by nuclear waste site proposals need an assurance from Mr Ferguson they can get on with their lives.

"When those traditional owners came back they said they'd been asked to keep the meeting details confidential and couldn't discuss it even with family around the area from Muckaty who were quite concerned and interested to know what had been discussed."
