Alice Springs alderman has mine objection blocked
An Alice Springs alderman says she is disappointed the town council has blocked her motion objecting to a mining exploration licence for the Angela Pamela mine site.
Alderman Jane Clark says the council should have been more supportive of the view that the proposed mine is too close to town.
Ms Clark said the council has supported her request for a report from the Mining Minister, ensuring exploration shafts will not be flooded and guarantees that water and air will not be contaminated.
She said Cameco and Paladin, the joint venture companies applying for the exploration licence, have not addressed the community's real concerns.
"Accidents have happened, there are still huge unresolved issues," she said.
"They said they learn from their mistakes and I'm really concerned that they're going to come here and make some more mistakes to learn from.
"I haven't heard anything yet that makes me feel comfortable having a uranium mine 25 kilometres from my town."
