Greens select Braitling candidate

ABC News Online

The Greens have pre-selected their first candidate for the Northern Territory election, announcing Jane Clark will run in the Alice Springs seat of Braitling.

It's Ms Clark's second attempt at an Alice Springs seat, having run in last year's Greatorex by-election.

She says she has lived in Braitling for 17 years.

Ms Clark was re-elected to the Alice Springs Town Council as a member of the Greens in March. She resigned as an alderman this morning.

Ms Clark says the party is likely to increase its vote at the poll next month.

The seat of Braitling has been held by retiring MLA Loraine Braham since 1994 and Ms Clark says she is hoping to beat the three male candidates she'll be up against.

"Greens have been polling better and better because we actually do present an alternative view," she said. "We're not in there just being reactionary to the government that's in power. We actually set our own agenda. We've consistently done that. We look at social justice, we look at environmental sustainability and those things are really important to the people of the Territory."

Ms Clark says one of her main aims is to have a stronger voice against the proposed Angela-Pamela uranium mine if she is elected as an MLA.

"We certainly haven't been reassured that mistakes that the company they're looking at engaging down here won't be made again," she said.

"We've been fobbed off basically by the Minister. I'll be pushing for intelligent debate on this issue."
