Uranium industry lobbies for trade with India

ABC Rural News

The Australian uranium industry wants the government to overturn a ban on the sale of uranium to India.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd pulled out of an agreement to supply uranium to India, citing nuclear proliferation concerns.

Two thirds of India's energy comes from coal-fired power stations, which produce extremely high greenhouse gas emissions.

Chris Eves, from Energy and Minerals Australia, says Australia is being high-handed in its approach.

He says greenhouse gases don't recognise international borders.

"Their greenhouse emissions problem is our problem, so for us to behave like an imperial power from the 1900s is unrealistic," he says.

"We should do everything we can to assist other countries in reducing their emissions.

"And if that means selling them our uranium, then that's what we should do, because it's in our own best interest."
