Video tells it as it is: uranium mining unsafe, unnecessary, unwanted in Northern Territory
Two days out from the NT election, the Australian Conservation Foundation has challenged all candidates to rule out new uranium mines in the Territory.
Launching a new video targeting the uranium industry, ACF’s Nuclear-Free Campaigner, Adele Pedder, said: “Territorians should use this election to demand a clean energy future, not a radioactive future – green collar jobs, not toxic jobs.”
“The next NT Government should consign the proposed Angela Pamela uranium mine to the radioactive waste bin of history.
“Territorians don’t want a dirty and dangerous uranium mine just 25 kilometres from Alice Springs.
“Alice Springs is a solar city, not a nuclear city,” she said.
The uranium industry in the Northern Territory has a proven track record of:
· Failed standards, radioactive leaks and spills;
· Unresolved radioactive waste problems;
· Harm to the well-being of Indigenous communities; and
· Health and safety risks to workers.
“Uranium mining is unsafe, unnecessary and unwanted in the NT”, Ms Pedder said.
“At this election, all candidates should state their opposition to any push from Canberra to impose a nuclear waste dump on the Territory and should rule out any new NT uranium mines.”
ACF has called on the major parties to incorporate the Jabiluka and Koongarra uranium leases into Kakadu National Park and strengthen the regulation of the Ranger uranium mine.
