The Alice Springs Angela Pamela (ASAP) Collective has called for the NT Government to reject the application for exploration at uranium deposits 25km from Alice Springs as soon as the new parliament sits.

The community action group points to the strong Greens vote in all town electorates as an indication that people are strongly opposed to the idea of a uranium project at Angela and Pamela.

Natalie Wasley, Beyond Nuclear Initiative Coordinator and ASAP Collective member states; “The NT election result clearly shows that people will not just sit back and accept this proposal- on the weekend residents took their opinions to the ballot box and voted for candidates opposing the uranium project.”

“A large number of people from all walks of life have come into the environment centre this year and expressed concern, frustration and outrage that the government would even consider this proposal,” added Jimmy Cocking, Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) Coordinator and ASAP member.

“The waste from a uranium operation would remain here long after the companies have packed up and left town.  The government now has the opportunity to put community voices ahead of corporate interests and reject the Cameco-Paladin application”, Ms Wasley concluded.

ASAP calls on the NT Government and Department of Mines and Minerals to reject the exploration proposal, and increase funding for renewable technology research, development and implementation across the Territory.
