There are plans for a new radioactive waste site at Australia's nuclear research reactor in Sydney's south.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Association says another area is needed to consolidate existing waste at Lucas Heights.

The application for the new site is before federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett.

The Federal Government is expected to identify potential sites for a new nuclear dump later this year.
