Public comment is being sought on how an environmental impact statement should be done for a rare earths mine, 130 kilometres north of Alice Springs.

Mining company Arafura Resources is required to prepare a statement on its Nolan's Bore project for the Northern Territory and federal governments because it involves uranium production.

Rare earth elements are used in the production of electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers.

The draft guidelines for the Nolan's Bore environmental impact statement are open for public comment until November 17.
