Aussies uneasy about uranium exports

The Age

Almost two-thirds of Australians oppose exporting uranium to countries with nuclear weapons, a survey has found.

The survey of 1,200 people, conducted by Newspoll for the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), showed 62 per cent were against exporting yellow cake to nations with nuclear weapons, with 31 per cent in favour.

Twenty-two per cent of those surveyed were opposed to uranium exports to nuclear-armed nations even if those nations were signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Further, 40 per cent of those surveyed supported the export of uranium to any country for use in nuclear power plants.

ACF nuclear-free campaigner David Noonan said the results showed how uneasy and concerned Australians were about uranium exports.

"Australia should not export uranium to any country that is not fully meeting its nuclear non-proliferation treaty obligations," he said in a statement.

"Russia, China, the USA, the UK and France are all failing to meet their NPT nuclear disarmament obligations."
