Survey finds Australians oppose uranium sales

ABC Radio National

A new poll has found almost two-thirds of Australians are against the export of uranium to countries with nuclear weapons.

The Newspoll commissioned by the Australian Conservation Foundation surveyed 1200 people nationally last weekend.

A spokesman for the foundation, David Noonan, says about 40 per cent of those surveyed also oppose exporting uranium for electricity generation.

He has called on mining companies as well as the federal government to listen to people's concerns.

"It's a very strong message both to BHP and to Rio Tinto that two-thirds of the Australian community are rejecting their agenda to sell uranium onto China in the near future," he said.

"And it's a very strong message to the new federal Labor Rudd government that the Australian community expect them not to go ahead with the proposed treaty signed by Howard and Putin back before the election to sell uranium onto Russia."
