Nuclear law 'an erosion of rights'

ABC News Online

Hearings investigating whether a Howard government law forcing a waste dump on the Northern Territory should be repealed have finished in Alice Springs.

It has been an emotional two days of hearings.

A protest and controversy about land council consultation led Monday's session and traditional owners like Kathleen Martin from proposed waste dump sites around the Territory vehemently defended their land.

"That dump site does not go on Mount Everard. I'm sorry but that's how I feel," she said.

Today the committee heard medical evidence about the possible long-term side effects of a dump.

The Northern Territory Government's Dr Diana Leeder gave evidence, labelling the federal legislation as an erosion of rights.

"The Northern Territory Government maintains its strong objection to the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act's capacity to override Northern Territory laws," she said.

The committee is expected to report back by the end of the year.
