Prospects good for NT uranium, says Mineral Council

ABC News Online

The Northern Territory Resources Council has rated uranium as one of the most stable commodities in the current economic crisis.

The council says while demand for base metals has dropped significantly, uranium remains steady.

CEO Scott Perkins says it's hard to pinpoint price trends, as uranium doesn't trade on a formal market, but the long term prospects are strong due partly to the need to maintain existing and planned nuclear power plants.

"That's why we see those prices far more steadier than other metals."

The council also rates uranium fuelled energy as a key element to fighting climate change.

Australia's uranium exports rose 34 per cent last year, and Mr Perkins says demand will only grow.

"There are some very good reasons for it to be taken up as a greenhouse gas abatement fuel and we'd like to see that happen.

"China is making or building several new nuclear power stations as we speak, hopefully they'll buy the uranium from Australian mines."

The comments come after Australia's first shipment of uranium to China.

Energy Resources of Australia has released few details on last month's shipment from its Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, but it was supplied to a Chinese energy provider.
