RIO TINTO'S uranium mining subsidiary Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) has received an insurance payout for cyclone-related damage at its Ranger mine in the Northern Territory in 2006.

ERA said it had received pre-tax cash proceeds totalling $188 million after three insurance claims for property damage and business interruption losses were settled.

The claims also related to flooding associated with exceptionally heavy rainfall in February 2007 and losses arising from a failure in the acid plant in May 2006.

"Our insurance is placed using the Rio Tinto group risk management team and there are a large number of insurers involved in the program from markets around the world,'' an ERA spokeswoman said.

Shares in ERA were up 2.56 per cent, at $17.66 at 1.35pm (AEDT).
