Cameco defends uranium survey
This week mining company, Cameco, have come under fire for a survey which they say shows support for the Angela Pamela uranium mine.
The survey showed that of the 750 people interviewed 56 per cent supported the Angela Pamela uranium mine being established south of town.
However, the Alice Springs Angela Pamela Collective says the questions were weighted and biased. They have called on Cameco to release the questions.
"A lot of people I've spoken to have said the questions were biased and that it was very difficult to express their opposition to the mine," said Emma Chessell from the Alice Springs Angela Pamela Collective.
While Cameco have refused the release the full survey, they did give an example of one of the questions to the ABC's Rohan Barwick.
"Which best describes your level of support of uranium exploration in the Alice Springs region?
Are you strongly supportive, somewhat supportive, somewhat unsupportive or not supportive at all?"</strong>
"You can see the question is asked in a very straightforward manner and we think the results reflect the general population's feeling," said Stefan Stander Angela Pamela Project Officer with Cameco.
However, Ms Chessell says many people were surprised by the results from the survey.
"I think everyone was surprised that they found that opinion in the town was slightly in favour of the mine.
"That's certainly not how the town has been expressing their own opinion. In petitions and public meetings opinion has been unanimously against mining development at Angela Pamela," said Ms Chessell.
