Uranium drilling begins near Alice Springs

The Angela Pamela uranium site located 25 kilometres south of Alice Springs has split the town between those for and against.

Cameco was awarded the license to explore the site late last year and have only been able to do environmental studies until now.

Rural reporter Emma Haskin was on site today and says Cameco has begun drilling.

"The drill looks like a massive syringe that's pumping deep into the earth's surface.

"It's probably going down about 50 m at this stage".

She says there are no protesters at the site.

"We're probably about four kilometres from the Maryvale road and twenty five kilometres from the centre of Alice Springs".

The drilling project is expected to continue for six or seven months.
