Nuclear power report boosts uranium mining
THE Territory is likely to benefit from a major report declaring nuclear energy to be the best fuel.
Sydney University energy expert Manfred Lenzen's study will be used by the mining industry to push the case for more uranium operations in the NT.
The report says nuclear power is the only low carbon technology available now capable of meeting the demand for electricity at a reasonable cost.
About 200 new nuclear power stations are planned worldwide.
China has 11 plants and plans to increase it nuclear capacity six-fold by 2030.
This will mean an increasing demand for uranium and the NT has vast uranium resources.
There is only one mine -- Ranger near Jabiru -- but two more are likely to open in Central Australia over the next few years.
Professor Lenzen looked at several energy technologies, including nuclear, hydro, wind, solar and geothermal.
He concluded that small hydro power schemes had the least carbon emissions, followed by nuclear and wind.
