Environment centre boycotts uranium exploration workshop

ABC Local News

The Arid Lands Environment Centre says it is boycotting a community workshop being held today for a company exploring for uranium near Alice Springs.

Cameco has employed market research company Synovate to conduct two focus groups with organisations and residents on the proposed Angela-Pamela uranium mine.

The centre's Jimmy Cocking says it is not proper consultation and it will not be taking part.

"I think a lot of people see that and just think, well what do they really want? If they're not prepared to come and talk to us as a company, why do they need to come through with a marketing company?" he said.

"All they're doing is really showing us how much money they've got and what their intentions are which is to railroad the process of getting this mine online."

A Cameco spokeswoman says it wants the research to be independent.

She says the results will be presented to a new community advisory group, and Cameco is inviting the environment centre to be a member of it.
