Drilling ends at Cameco uranium site

ABC NT Local News

Exploratory drilling has finished at a uranium prospect near Alice Springs.

Uranium mining company Cameco has completed 27,000 metres of drilling at the Angela project 25 kilometres south of the town.

The company is hoping to have a resource estimate by next April and begin a scoping study by the end of 2010, but project manager Stephan Stander says more drilling might be needed.

"I can already see from the results we're getting now that we would probably need a follow-up round of drilling just to hone in on areas where we can see the best mineralisation is," he said.

Environmental monitoring and rehabilitation work will continue at the prospect.

Mr Stander says workers will remain on-site, rehabilitating old drill holes from exploration in the 1970s.

He says Cameco will also investigate the permeability of bedrock underneath the uranium ore while its geological modelling is underway.

"The rock zone below the Angela deposit ... everybody wants to know how solid is that seal between the actual Angela deposit and the town's water supply," he said.
