'We will take nuke waste'
THE manager of a remote Territory station says he would welcome a nuclear waste dump if the Federal Government decides to put it in his back yard.
The Australian Conservation Foundation says it expects Federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson to announce next week that the controversial dump will be put at Muckaty Station, about 120km north of Tennant Creek.
The station's manager Ray Aylett said he had no objection to the proposed dump.
"I reckon it would create work for people around the area," he said.
"I don't think it would affect the actual station much.
"It's only 1sq km that would be dug up."
ACF spokesman Dave Sweeney said he believes Mr Ferguson will announce Muckaty Station as the site for the dump as early as next week.
"It was confirmed in Senate Estimates a week ago that there would be an announcement within a month," he said.
He said there were only four potential sites for the dump, all in the Northern Territory.
The sites are:
HARTS Range about 120km northeast of Alice Springs;
FISHERS Ridge near Katherine;
MT EVERARD about 30km north of Alice Springs; and
MUCKATY Station about 120km north of Tennant Creek.
Mr Sweeney said he expected Muckaty Station to be announced as the site as it was the only potential location which had the approval of Traditional Owners.
He said the Central Land Council would not give approval for the site at Harts Range or Mt Everard and the climate and geology at Fishers Ridge was not appropriate for the dump.
Mr Sweeney said Traditional Owners, the Federal Government and the Northern Land Council had signed a "secret" agreement that would see the owners receive a benefits package if they agreed to have the dump on their land.
But in a statement, the NLC said Mr Sweeney had been misunderstood and there was no "secret agreement".
"He was referring to the 2007 nomination agreement at Muckaty which has been public since then," the NLC said.
"There has been no further or other agreement regarding nuclear waste matters."
