Detail of deal to be kept secret by NLC
THE Northern Land Council has refused to release details of an agreement it signed with the Federal Government and some traditional owners at Muckaty Station over the proposed nuclear waste dump.
In a statement last week, the council said the 2007 nomination agreement - which delivered $11 million in a trust and $1 million in education benefits if the waste dump is built at Muckaty - was public.
But yesterday spokesman Guy McLean said the document itself was confidential. "Everyone knew there was an agreement but the document is a confidential document," he said.
"We acknowledged publicly that there was an agreement struck and we did say it was worth $11 million in trust and $1 million in scholarships but we have never made public the document."
Australian Conservation Foundation spokesman Dave Sweeney said the document should be made public immediately.
He also called on Resources Minister Martin Ferguson to make public an environmental report on the Muckaty site by consultants Parson Brinkerhoff.
"The two key pieces of documentation have never been made public," he said.
