Greens Senator visits Traditional Owners on Muckaty waste dump
Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam is visiting the proposed site of the Commonwealth Radioactive waste dump this week. Senator Ludlam will travel to Muckaty Station outside Tennant Creek to meet with Traditional Owners from the area, and will then attend a public meeting in Tennant.
"I am pleased we were able to buy some time for the Senate Inquiry to conduct its hearings, but I'm very worried that the committee will choose not to come to Tennant Creek. It is essential we hear from the people on the front line as the Government moves into a new, more coercive phase of their campaign to force a radioactive dump into the NT. "
"I am looking forward to the opportunity to sit down with local people and work out how we can support them while we make the case for a more democratic and measured response to radioactive waste management issues."
"The Rudd Government is pursuing a predatory crash-through strategy to get a remote dump up and running. The Greens believe it is much more important to get it right - to take the time to hear from the experts and the local community, and craft a strategy that sets us up for safe, long term waste management," Senator Ludlam said.
Public Meeting:
6pm Wednesday 3rd March 2010
CWA Hall, 16 Noble Street, Tennant Creek
