Snowdon confirms pro-nuclear dump vote

The federal Labor Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, says he will vote for new legislation which will override the Northern Territory's power to block a nuclear waste dump.

Some Ngapa traditional owners from Muckaty Station, 120 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, have nominated their land as the future location of a national radioactive repository.

The Federal Government is pursuing the site, which will still have to clear scientific and environmental assessments.

Mr Snowdon says he is disappointed the traditional owners have offered the site.

"I'm disappointed the Ngapa have continued [to] have this, continued to want their land used in this way, but that's their right," he said.

"There's a process of dealing with it: it's open and transparent and it will ultimately lead either to a development of a waste facility on Ngapa land or not, depending on a whole range of other issues."

However, he will not be voting against the legislation that overrides the Territory's own laws against the transportation of nuclear waste.

"I'll be voting for it and it won't be difficult for me at all," he said.

"I think it's very clear what the process is here and it's quite a transparent process."

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Alyawarr people in Central Australia has accused the Northern Land Council of shutting down debate on the proposed radioactive waste dump at Muckaty Station.

Richard Downs says while his community will not be directly affected by the dump, many of his relatives will.

Mr Downs says the NLC is ignoring the views of Aboriginal elders and families who are against the dump.

"It's about showing Aboriginal people the respect and dignity," he said.

"I mean the land council, the Northern Land Council, should follow that rule where they need to consult with all Aboriginal people in that area.

"They haven't done that, they just targeted one group."

The ABC has sought comment from the Northern Land Council.
