Tennant Creek locals gather to talk nuclear waste
SPEAKERS travelled thousands of kilometres to address residents of the Territory town at the centre of the national nuclear waste dump debate this week.
The Tennant Creek public meeting at the CWA Hall was attended by more than 150 people on Wednesday night.
Organised by Nat Wasley from the Beyond Nuclear initiative, speakers included Greens Senator Scott Ludlam who travelled from Canberra, Barkly MLA Gerry McCarthy, and respected Aboriginal elder Bunny Napurula.
Muckaty owners who had travelled out to the site of the proposed nuclear waste dump to film with ABC TV upstaged Tony Abbott's disappearing act by getting lost out bush for several hours.
While it seemed their appearance at the meeting was going to be a no-show, their late arrival drew cheers from the crowd.
The gathering heard from a number of speakers that despite Northern Land Council claims that the nomination of the site was consensual, hundreds with traditional ties to the land vehemently opposed it.
Mr McCarthy said the NT Government did not want a dump imposed on the Territory and would continue to oppose it.
