Hundreds march to protest nuke dump

Tennant and District Times

HUNDREDS marched along Tennant’s main street last Saturday to protest about the proposed nuclear waste dump at Muckaty.

Several visitors from Alice Springs, Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Tasmania came to Tennant Creek for the Easter weekend as a mark of support.

Protesters rallied in Peko Park where a range of speakers, including traditional owners of Muckaty, voiced their opposition to the consultation process which led to the Northern Land Council’s nomination of the site which the Government has admitted is now the only one under consideration to house the dump.

Lynette Lewis, accompanied by Zaddock Johnson, sang a song about Muckaty which was written by her sister, Shirley Lewis, and Aboriginal women danced a story about the land at Muckaty.
