A SENATE committee has backed legislation that would allow a nuclear waste dump to be built in the Northern Territory despite objections from some indigenous groups over the preferred site of Muckaty Station.
In a split report, the Senate legal and constitutional affairs legislation committee recommended the passage of the legislation that would allow the radioactive waste dump to be built on the Northern Territory site.
The Northern Land Council nominated the Muckaty Station site in 2007 but there was a dispute about whether all relevant traditional owners had been consulted.
