Shift in nuclear policy could 'pressure' NT
A group campaigning against a proposed nuclear waste dump in the Northern Territory is planning to target Labor ahead of possible changes to its nuclear policy.
The Beyond Nuclear Initiative is lobbying against the Federal Government's plan to store nuclear waste at Muckaty Station, north of Tennant Creek.
The Government's current policy does not back nuclear power generation in Australia, but this week Prime Minister Julia Gillard said it would be debated at a national conference next year.
The Beyond Nuclear Initiative's Natalie Wasley says a change to Labor policy could result in more pressure on the Territory to take the nation's nuclear waste.
"The Territory already has a lot of pressure for uranium mining, and of course the waste dump that's trying to be forced at Muckaty," she said.
"I think the Territory may see an increased push across the [nuclear] industry.
"And there is just not the demand for it at the moment."
