"The volume of contaminated water at Ranger Uranium Mine could exceed the maximum approved level if heavy rains continue into March and April," said Cat Beaton from the Environment Centre NT.
"Records show that rainfall at the mine site has exceed the current tailings dam capacity many times in the last 40 years.
"Uranium miner, Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) is struggling to manage water at the Ranger mine, there for shouldn't be given approval for an expansion.
"Regulators should stop letting ERA getting away with poor water management.
"The cumulative rainfall for March and April exceeded 500mm- the current available height left in the tailings dam- seven times since 1973 at Jabiru Airport (1973, 1976, 1983, 1985, 1999, 2006, 2007).
The Territory Resources Department and the Federal Supervising Scientist approved ERA's request to raise the maximum water level last Friday from 52.3 metres to 53 metres.
"Its alarming that the Ranger uranium mine is operating so close to the margin, near the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park - putting the livelihood of community and business at risk."
